Abstract

This paper summarizes research that sheds new light on the construct of subjective quality of life (SQOL) in two ways. The first is by establishing an empirical normative standard against which both groups and individuals can be compared. An examination of such data reveals that SQOL is generally held within quite a narrow positive normative range. The second is through the proposition that SQOL is maintained under homeostatic control by a combination of personality and cognitive devices. A model of homeostatic control is presented and the implications for the interpretation of SQOL data are discussed.
