Alternativas residenciales comunitarias para personas con enfermedades mentales crónicas

Resumen

La atención comunitaria orientada hacía la integración social del colectivo de Enfermos Mentales Crónicos, exige articular un sistema coordinado y comprensivo de Servicios y Programas que cubran las diferentes necesidades de esta población y promuevan su rehabilitación e inserción en la comunidad, de un modo lo más autónomo y normalizado posible. Un elemento clave dentro de este sistema son los Servicios Residenciales. Contar con un adecuado abanico de alternativas comunitarias de alojamiento y residencia es un requisito esencial para posibilitar el mantenimiento en la comunidad y la integración social de muchos Enfermos Mentales Crónicos. En este artículo se repasa la importancia e implicaciones de los servicios residenciales en la atención comunitaria de este colectivo y se exponen algunos de los principales desarrollos en este ámbito junto con nuevas perspectivas surgidas en los últimos años

Abstract

Community care oriented towards social integration of the chronic mentally ill requires a coordinated system of services and programmes which will permit coverage of the various needs of these persons while encoyraging their rehabilitation and integration in the community with the greatest possible degree of independence and normality. Among the key elements in this system are the Community Residence Services. If large numbers of persons with chronic mental illness are to be successfully maintained and integrated within society, an adequate range of lodging and residential facilities is essential This article reviews the importance and the implications of residential services for the provision of community care to this group. It further draws attention to some of the main developments in this sphere and looks at the new perspectives that have emerged in recent years
