Abstract

The influence that television may have on children and young people should be understood as mediated by the immediate cultural context. Thus, television viewing would not only depend on factors inherent to the individual or to television context as themselves, but also on the type of influence held by other factors among which we could highlight parental mediation. This study follows this approach of the dialectic relationship between the individual, the television and the family context. The aim of this study is to analyse certain aspects related to the family setting concerning television viewing, and to examine parental mediation from the perspective of 144 adolescents and young people. They were administered the Television Viewing Habits Questionnaire (TV-VHQ) designed to collect data about television preferences or diets, and several other aspects related to the use of this medium. The results show that the predominant type of family mediation in our sample was co-viewing, followed by instructive or guided mediation and then by restrictive mediation. Implications of these data are discussed and possible areas for future research are identified.
