        <title>RESUMEN</title>

        <title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>This study examined the effect of three socio-educational interventions in teacher training students on the reduction of stigma: a serious game called Stigma-Stop, a program based on direct contact between students and people with mental health problems, and the broadcast of a documentary with a talk from a professional. The sample consisted of 120 undergraduates of the Degree in Teaching in Early Childhood Education and the Degree in Teaching in Primary Education of a Spanish university, with a pretest-posttest experimental design, the participants were randomly divided into three experimental groups and a control group. The results show a statistically significant reduction in stigma levels between the pretest and posttest in the three interventions, but not in the control group, which remained stable in both measurements. This showed that the three interventions were effective in reducing stigma, predominantly in the danger dimension and the total score.</p>

          <title>Introducciónn</title>

      <title>Método</title>

      <title>Discusión</title>
      <sec>
        <title>Conclusiones</title>

      <title>Extended Summary</title>
<p>Stigma is a historical condition that continues to be a handicap in the recovery of people with mental health problems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Phelan et al., 2000</xref>). Stigmas are negative reactions, attitudes or beliefs towards certain groups that generate processes of exclusion and limited social participation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Corrigan et al., 2009</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Corrigan et al., 2006</xref>).</p>
<p>The effects of mental health stigma can endure even when psychiatric symptoms have subsided (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Link et al., 1987</xref>). In this sense, stigma also hinders rehabilitation, increases reluctance to seek help from mental health problems services (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Corrigan et al., 2010</xref>), and limits social relationships and job search (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Kranke et al., Munson, 2010</xref>).</p>
<p>To overcome these prejudices, education must be one of the most important tools. Education allows us to provide a normalizing approach, as well as establish prevention and awareness programs (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Moreno et al., 2018</xref>). However, educational interventions against stigma are still not commonly known.</p>
<p>The main objective was to analyze the effect of three interventions: i) intervention based on contact with patients with mental health problems, ii) intervention focused on the use of a professional’s presentation together with the viewing of a documentary called SAME, and iii) intervention supported by a serious game called Stigma-Stop (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B08">Cangas et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B09">Cangas, Navarro, et al., 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Mullor et al., 2019</xref>). The hypothesis of this study is that all the treatments will be effective in the statistically significant reduction of the stigma of university students towards people with mental health problems.</p>
<p>The sample was 120 students of the Degree in Teaching in Early Childhood Education and the Degree in Teaching in Primary Education of a Spanish university. To collect the information, the Questionnaire on Students’ Attitudes towards Schizophrenia (CAEE) was used, it is the Spanish adaptation of the Questionnaire on Students Attitudes towards Schizophrenia (QSAS; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Schulze et al., 2003</xref>). The participants collaborated voluntarily. Anonymity and confidentiality were guaranteed in data collection and processing. The study was conducted in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of Ethics.</p>
<p>A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was developed with a control group and three experimental groups. The students were randomly distributed into four groups and the treatments to the groups were also randomly determined. The participants were measured at two moments, the pretest before performing the intervention and the posttest after finishing it. Specifically, the groups were:</p>
<p>- Contact with patients: intervention focused on visiting a psychosocial rehabilitation center with people with severe mental disorders.</p>
<p>- Documentary and talk: intervention based on a presentation in a university classroom by a professional with more than 10 years of experience as a worker in a mental health psychosocial rehabilitation center.</p>
<p>- Serious game: intervention focused on the use of the serious game Stigma Stop in the same university classroom.</p>
<p>- Control group: no intervention, no experimental treatment was applied.</p>
<p>The results show that there was a significant reduction in the posttest compared to the pretest in the danger dimension in the three interventions, but not in the control group. Significant differences were found in the stereotypes dimension in the intervention focused on the documentary and the presentation. On the total score, all three interventions had a significant effect on students. There are statistically significant values in the three interventions, with a high effect size in all cases, except in the control group, which determines a positive effect of the treatments.</p>
<p>Through an analysis of covariance of the two moments, the results of the posttest (two dimensions and general score) were compared, controlling the effect of the pretest, of the three interventions against the control group. The significant differences (with important effect) in the danger dimension, in the stereotypes dimension, and in the global score are confirmed. After pairing the groups, in the post hoc tests, there are significant differences in the danger dimension in the decrease in stigma in the three interventions compared to the control group. No significant differences were found in the stereotypes dimension. In the general score, with respect to the control group, there are differences in the intervention based on the documentary and the presentation.</p>
<p>Regarding the intervention that was based on direct contact with patients with mental health disorders, it is the one that showed a greater effect size in the danger dimension and in the total score. These results are consistent with the scientific evidence focused on direct contact as the main tool to reduce stigma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Henderson et al., 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Lien et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B56">Thornicroft et al., 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B58">Yamaguchi et al., 2013</xref>).</p>
<p>The viewing of a documentary, together with the presentation of professionals who know the characteristics of the patients, can also be an appropriate intervention that builds a positive image of people with severe mental disorders. There are elements that have a great stigmatizing capacity, where the cinema and the media are part of this group (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Muñoz et al., 2009</xref>).</p>
<p>Finally, the application of the Stigma-Stop also reduced the stigma in the danger dimension and in the total score. This result is like previous studies where the reduction of fear towards these patients is observed, a very common element in stigma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B06">Cangas &amp; Galván, 2020</xref>; Cangas, López, et al., 2017; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Mullor et al., 2019</xref>).</p>
<p>In conclusion, the reduction of stigma through the three treatments reinforces the importance of developing interventions in the educational field to increase knowledge of the reality of people with severe mental disorders. With this, students will have adequate training that will allow them to be change-makers in their work. In this way, social inclusion will be favored, and awareness of mental disorders will be increased from multiple perspectives: psychosocial, educational, clinical, etc.</p>
<p>The main limitations of the study are the small sample size, the limited selection process, the limited knowledge of sociodemographic, academic, and professional variables, the need to improve treatments, the restricted control of variables, and the lack of follow-up of the students. Likewise, in future research it would be interesting to investigate the possibility of applying the three interventions in combination to check if the effect is greater or how they can be combined.</p>
